The EERA Joint Programme on Smart Grids (JP Smart Grids) has played an active role in shaping EERA’s response to the European Commission’s public consultation on the upcoming Grid Package — a key initiative to ensure access to affordable, secure, and clean energy across Europe.

The reply builds directly on the recently published JP Smart Grids white paper, which outlines the pivotal role of smart grid technologies in delivering a successful clean energy transition. By integrating input and expertise from JP members, the programme helped define the priorities put forward by EERA to strengthen Europe’s grids.

Among the key recommendations are:

• Simplifying environmental permitting to speed up grid expansion.

• Sharing best practices among stakeholders to foster collaboration and innovation.

• Developing flexibility mechanisms to optimise grid use and empower consumers.

• Enhancing grid security and stability, learning from incidents such as the Iberian blackout.

• Upskilling and reskilling the workforce with future-ready skills.

• Engaging society more effectively through campaigns and tools that build public trust.

By combining technological, social, and workforce perspectives, JP Smart Grids underscores the need for stronger, smarter, and more resilient grids as a foundation for Europe’s clean energy future.
